Project Story

This smaller build focused on making a polished physical object: a wooden pen with a display stand. It complements the larger engineering projects by showing attention to material finish, ergonomics, and presentation.

Why I Built It

Even simple everyday objects need thoughtful shape, finish, and display to feel well made rather than purely functional.

What I Built

A handmade pen and stand that treats the object as a finished product, with attention to proportion, contrast, and presentation.

What I Did

  • Made the pen and display stand
  • Refined the physical finish and presentation
  • Documented the final object as a portfolio piece

How I Built It

Build Flow

Material selection -> shaping and assembly -> surface finishing -> final display and documentation.

How It Works

The pen is built as a finished physical object and presented on a stand, combining practical use with display-focused product design.

Hardware

  • Wooden pen body
  • Display stand
  • Metal pen hardware

What Was Hard

  • Achieving a clean finish on a small object
  • Balancing function with visual presentation
  • Designing a stand that supports the pen without distracting from it

Build Reference

The project centred on the physical finish and presentation of a useful object rather than a software or electronics architecture.

Results & Impact

  • Finished handmade pen and stand
  • Small-scale design piece showing craftsmanship and attention to detail
  • Added variety to the portfolio beyond software and electronics builds

What I Learned

  • Small objects reveal finish quality quickly
  • Presentation affects how a prototype is perceived
  • Craft projects develop patience and physical design judgement

Next Steps

  • Experiment with other materials and finishes
  • Create a cleaner process documentation sequence
  • Design a more refined stand iteration
